Sealing of plinths and parquet

Sealing of plinths and parquet

Skirting completes your parquet or laminate floor. Sawing to size, gluing and sealing: we will explain exactly how to tackle this job in these practical instructions.

Instructions

1. Calculate your material

Make a sketch of the room. Measure up and make a note of how long the skirting boards need to be for each wall. You then calculate how many metres of skirting you will need. TIP: You will always lose some material after sawing. Therefore allow for an extra 10%.

2. Saw the skirting

Mark off the skirting boards and saw them to the correct length. Use a mitre saw for the corners at an angle of 45 degrees.

3. Clean the wall and apply the assembly adhesive

Make the wall and the rear side of the skirting board clean, dry and free of dust and grease. Apply Soudal T-Rex Super in dots every 10 cm along the entire length of the skirting board using a caulking gun. Be sure to deposit sufficient adhesive on the edges and corners.

4. Glue the skirting boards onto the wall

Press the skirting boards against the wall, a few millimetres above the floor. Check that the skirting board is perfectly level and tap firmly everywhere with a rubber mallet.

5. Leave to dry and tape off the sealant edges

Soudal T-Rex Super can carry weight after 24 hours. Wait until the adhesive has fully hardened before you start sealing. Choose an elastic joint filler such as Soudal Parquet Sealant for the joint between the floor and skirting board. This absorbs the movement of the joint. The upper joints of the skirting board absorb less movement. Fill them with Soudal Paintable sealant. Use good masking tape to neatly tape off the sealant edges. The joint will then be nice and straight. Make sure that the joint is at least 5 millimetres wide.

6. Open the cartridge

Cut the top off the cartridge with a safety cutter. Turn the nozzle on top and cut the end slanted. You get the best result if the opening in the nozzle is just as large as the joint you want to fill. Put the cartridge in the caulking gun and squeeze the handle until sealant appears.

7. Start filling

Place the nozzle where you want to start filling. Squeeze the handle and move the caulking gun over the joint in a smooth movement. Apply sufficient sealant everywhere to ensure that the product adheres well.

8. Smooth and remove the tape

Wet your finger or the putty spreader with clean water. Smooth the joint and immediately remove the masking tape. Smooth carefully again to smooth away any protruding edges.

Tip:

  • Choose a sealant of the same colour as your floor. That gives the nicest result. Soudal Parquet Sealant can be bought in 10 different colours and shades.
  • If you have spilled the parquet sealant, you can remove it with water as long as the product has not cured.

The following is also useful:

  • Quickly clean your hands with Soudal Swipex wipes .
  • Parquet sealant is suitable for wood, parquet floor and laminate floors. Do you have a natural stone floor? Use Soudal Natural Stone sealant to seal your joints.
  • Sealing joints in ceramic tiles is done with Soudal Building sealant.
