verlijmen van hout en plaatmateriaal

Gluing of wood and board material

If you have some wooden planks, wood strips or pieces of wood from other jobs left over, you can make a nice tray or great table mats.

Instructions

1. Collect scrap wood

Choose non-impregnated or untreated wood: pine wood strips, scrap multiplex or any surplus of precious woods such as oak, teak or walnut. The more scrap wood you use, the larger your tray will be.

2. Bond the wood

Sand the scrap wood using fine sanding paper and make sure they are dust and grease free. Stir the Soudal Super Fast Wood Adhesive pot or shake the bottle before you start. Apply the adhesive to the surfaces that you want to bond. Use a fine-toothed spreader or brush to get the best result.

3. Clamp together

When you have stuck all the planks against each other, use screw clamps to firmly clamp them together. Position the screw clamps at equal distances from each other and tighten them uniformly. Wipe off surplus adhesive using a wet cloth and allow it to dry for 20 minutes.

4. Plane to an equal thickness and sand it smooth

Loosen the screw clamps. Use a planing machine to give your composite plank an equal thickness. Sand smooth using fine sanding paper.

5. Saw into shape

Choose a nice shape for your tray: an hexagon, a circle, a square, etc. Why not give your table mats the shape of a pear, balloon or cloud? Draw the shape on your plank using a pencil. Cut it out using a jigsaw.

6. Finish

Fix handles on to your tray or paint your table mats

Tip

If you don’t have a planing machine, saw the wood strips and planks to obtain the same thickness before you bond them together.

The following is also useful:

  • If you want to use the tray outside, bond the wood with Soudal Waterproof Wood Adhesive or use Soudal Waterproof PU Wood Adhesive. This will ensure your tray can withstand solar heat or a heavy downpour better.
  • If you prefer not to drill into your tray, fix the handles using Soudal Wood Fix. You can glue metal, stone, plastic and wood with this construction adhesive because of the hybrid polymers it contains. You do not have to clamp. The adhesive will be dry and be ready for use after 24 hours.
